CHAPTER 34

“I figured Tucker must’ve deserved what happened to him, but what did this joker do?” Amy stood to her feet. “And if we weren’t positive before, we can now definitely rule out Candace Cole as a suspect.”

I nodded, still wondering about the connection between our two victims.

“This has to be the work of a man,” Amy continued. “The good news is that Tucker probably wasn’t a child predator, because what are the chances of two different men molesting the same kid? On the other hand, it is possible for two men to be screwing the same married woman, so I think this could be the work of her husband.”

“It could still be a woman,” I countered. “Maybe she was dating both of these guys, and they both cheated on her.”

“Do you really believe that?”

I hesitated before answering, looking around while I thought about it. As Susan had mentioned, a crowd was gathering along the western shoulder of the highway, and all eyes were fixed on the back deck of the boat where Amy and I stood. Some of the people just watched, while others huddled together and talked in what looked to be hushed tones, and still others filmed with their phones. I groaned inwardly when I saw the cameras pointed in our direction. The videos would no doubt show up on social media somewhere, so we would have to be very careful not to expose any part of the man when we moved his body. The last thing I wanted was for his family to see him in this condition.

As I studied the crowd, I didn’t notice any weirdos standing off to the side, but I had learned a long time ago that you couldn’t judge a book by its cover. One person might look like a sadistic killer, but be as gentle as a lamb. On the other hand, someone might appear all sweet and docile, yet they’d be sick enough to do what had been done to Tucker and the poor soul at our feet.

I frowned, wondering if these two men really had this coming to them. What if they were child predators? Although a long shot, it was possible for two men to have molested the same child, and this could be the work of a father getting retribution for his kid or kids. If that were the case, the torture wouldn’t seem brutal at all. In fact, it would be minor compared to what I would’ve done to these men.

“Hey, are you listening to me?” came Amy’s voice, breaking through my thoughts. “Do you really think a woman could kill two men like this, dump their bodies, take their cars, and disappear without a trace? I mean, this dude has to weigh more than 250 pounds. I can’t lift his big ass off the ground by myself.”

“No,” I finally said. “I don’t think this was a woman. If it was, she would’ve had some help, but I’m thinking this is the work of a man—or several men.
